Woxsen Japan Centre Celebrates Japanese Culture Through the Tanzaku and Momiji Tradition

Oct 20, 2026

Tanzaku are narrow strips of paper on which people in Japan write their wishes and hang them from branches, a tradition tied to Tanabata, the star festival. The Momiji, or Japanese maple, carries its own meaning. Its autumn leaves stand for change and for finding beauty in the turning of the seasons.

At the festival organized by Woxsen Japan Centre, Woxsen scholars brought the two together, hanging their own tanzaku on a Momiji. It is a small ritual that asks for reflection, a wish written by hand and shared with the community.
