As part of the elective Material Exploration: Wood & Bamboo, School of Arts and Design students engaged in an immersive, hands-on learning experience that examined how materials influence design. Through guided workshops with a bamboo expert, they explored the properties, behavior, strengths, and limitations of wood and bamboo beyond their surface appeal.
Students experimented with techniques such as cutting, bending, splitting, drilling, sanding, joinery, weaving, and finishing, while documenting their observations and learnings. Building on this, they translated material understanding into product concepts through research, sketching, prototyping, testing, and iterative refinement—integrating craftsmanship with sustainable design thinking.
The course culminated in an exhibition showcasing material studies, fabrication samples, process documentation, and functional prototypes—capturing each student’s journey from exploration to product realization.
