CLAT 2027 registration has started on August 3, 2026. The Consortium of National Law Universities has opened the online application window for admission to 24 NLUs and over 60 affiliated law schools across the country.
If you have been researching the top law colleges in India, this is the moment to lock in your CLAT UG strategy for the year ahead. This guide walks through the official registration process, eligibility rules, exam pattern, syllabus, important dates, and whether the BA LLB or BBA LLB stream fits your career plan better.
CLAT remains the single largest gateway into India’s national law universities, and every year the competition for seats at the top law colleges in India grows steeper. Missing the registration window means waiting an entire year for another attempt, since the Consortium conducts CLAT only once annually.
Furthermore, early registration gives candidates more time to select exam cities, correct application errors within the permitted window, and plan their preparation calendar around the December exam date. Aspirants who wait until the final week often face payment gateway congestion and last-minute document upload issues, so early action remains the safer route.
The Consortium of NLUs manages the entire CLAT 2027 admission cycle through its official portal, consortiumofnlus.ac.in. Registration opened on August 3, 2026, at 10 AM and will remain open until October 31, 2026.
Every aspirant hoping to enter the top law colleges in India must complete each step accurately, since incomplete or mismatched applications are rejected without exception.
Here is the step-by-step registration process for CLAT 2027:
Therefore, double-check every entry before making the payment, since corrections after submission are not entertained. The Consortium will release admit cards roughly two weeks before the exam, tentatively in the fourth week of November 2026, accessible through the same login credentials.
Candidates hunting for the top law colleges in India should also read the information brochure carefully, since it lists seat intake, reservation policy, and fee structures for every participating university.
Before setting your sights on the top law colleges in India, confirm you meet the basic eligibility bar. The Consortium of NLUs sets no upper age limit for CLAT UG. Consequently, candidates of any age can apply, as long as they satisfy the academic requirements.
For the qualifying examination, General, OBC, PwD, NRI, PIO, and OCI candidates need at least 45 percent marks in Class 12 or an equivalent examination. SC and ST candidates need a minimum of 40 percent.
Students who are appearing for their Class 12 board exams in the 2026-27 academic session are also eligible to apply, though they must submit proof of having passed at the time of admission counselling. Failure to clear Class 12 by the admission deadline makes a candidate ineligible, regardless of the CLAT score.
Reservation benefits also apply during counselling, with seats set aside for SC, ST, OBC, EWS, PwD, and other state-specific categories as notified by each participating university. Candidates must produce valid certificates issued by a competent authority at the time of admission to claim these benefits, and any discrepancy can cost a candidate their reserved-category seat.
Notably, CLAT places no cap on the number of attempts. Aspirants can appear for the exam as many times as they wish, provided they continue to meet the age and academic eligibility requirements each year. This flexibility keeps the door open for repeat aspirants who did not make the cut for their preferred college in an earlier attempt. As a result, CLAT remains one of the more accessible national entrance tests among students eyeing the top law colleges in India.
CLAT UG 2027 follows the same offline, pen-and-paper format used in recent cycles. The Consortium has confirmed there will be no changes to the exam pattern or syllabus this year, which gives repeat aspirants a clear advantage in preparation. The test carries 120 multiple-choice questions worth 120 marks in total, to be completed within two hours, from 2 PM to 4 PM on exam day.
| English Language | 22 to 26 | 20 percent |
| Current Affairs including General Knowledge | 28 to 32 | 25 percent |
| Legal Reasoning | 28 to 32 | 25 percent |
| Logical Reasoning | 22 to 26 | 20 percent |
| Quantitative Techniques | 10 to 14 | 10 percent |
| Total | 120 | 100 percent |
The marking scheme awards one mark for every correct answer and deducts 0.25 marks for each incorrect response. There is no penalty for questions left unattempted.
This negative marking structure makes accuracy just as important as speed for anyone aiming at the top law colleges in India, since a handful of careless errors can shift your rank by hundreds of places during counselling.
English Language tests reading comprehension through passages of roughly 450 words each, drawn from contemporary fiction, non-fiction, and journalistic writing. Vocabulary and grammar questions are embedded within the passage rather than tested in isolation, so wide reading habits help more than isolated word lists.
Current Affairs and General Knowledge covers static GK alongside events from the preceding twelve months, with particular emphasis on legal, constitutional, and policy developments. Aspirants should follow a reliable daily source and revise monthly compilations closer to the exam, since this section carries the highest weightage alongside Legal Reasoning.
Legal Reasoning presents short fact situations followed by a legal principle. Candidates apply the stated principle to the facts without needing prior formal legal training, which keeps this section accessible to first-generation law aspirants.
Logical Reasoning checks critical thinking through analogies, arguments, assumptions, and cause-and-effect relationships rather than abstract puzzles, so practice should focus on argument structure over shortcuts. Quantitative Techniques includes elementary mathematics, ratios, proportions, and data interpretation drawn from short passages, tables, or graphs, testing comfort with numbers rather than advanced formulae.
Since every section except part of Quantitative Techniques is passage-based, reading speed and comprehension matter more than rote memorisation. Aspirants preparing for the top law colleges in India should build a daily newspaper habit alongside timed mock tests to build both stamina and accuracy well before December.
Both the BA LLB Hons and BBA LLB Hons programmes are five-year integrated undergraduate law degrees, but they differ meaningfully in academic focus. The BA LLB stream blends humanities subjects such as political science, sociology, history, and economics with core law papers. It suits students drawn to litigation, judicial services, policy research, or academia, since the humanities grounding builds strong analytical and argumentative reasoning early on.
The BBA LLB stream, in contrast, integrates business management subjects such as accounting, finance, marketing, and organisational behaviour with the same core legal training. It suits students eyeing corporate law, mergers and acquisitions, compliance, or in-house counsel positions at companies.
Recruiters at law firms with strong corporate practices often favour graduates comfortable with business fundamentals from day one, which gives this stream an edge for commercially focused careers.
Neither degree changes your CLAT eligibility, since the entrance exam and cutoffs remain largely identical for both streams at most universities. Therefore, the choice should rest on career direction rather than perceived difficulty or prestige. If courtroom practice, public service, or academic research appeals to you, the BA LLB route offers a more natural foundation.
If corporate advisory work or business law attracts you, the BBA LLB route builds relevant vocabulary years before your peers. Most top law colleges in India, including a majority of NLUs and private universities, offer both streams side by side, so you can choose your specialisation without changing your target institution.

Building a strong CLAT preparation plan starts with an honest diagnostic test to identify weak sections. Since Legal Reasoning and Current Affairs together carry half the total weightage, most toppers dedicate more weekly hours to these two areas. Reading a national newspaper daily, maintaining a one-page current affairs summary each week, and revisiting landmark Supreme Court judgments help build the contextual knowledge this section demands.
For English and Logical Reasoning, timed passage-based practice matters more than grammar drills. Attempting at least one full-length mock test every week from September onward helps candidates build the stamina needed for a two-hour offline exam. Quantitative Techniques, though the smallest section, offers quick, high-accuracy marks for candidates who revise basic arithmetic and data interpretation early, rather than leaving it for the final weeks.
Before starting the CLAT 2027 application, keep a few documents ready to avoid last-minute delays. These include a recent passport-size photograph with a plain background, a scanned signature, Class 10 and Class 12 mark sheets, a valid photo identity proof, and category certificates for SC, ST, OBC, EWS, or PwD candidates where applicable.
Keeping these files pre-scanned in PDF format speeds up the registration process considerably and reduces the risk of upload errors close to the deadline.
Candidates need a Class 12 pass with at least 45 percent marks for General and OBC categories, or 40 percent for SC and ST categories. There is no upper age limit or attempt restriction.
Twenty-four NLUs and over 60 affiliated institutions accept CLAT scores, including NALSAR Hyderabad, NLSIU Bengaluru, and select private universities such as Woxsen University’s School of Law.
Online registration opened on August 3, 2026, and closes on October 31, 2026, through the official Consortium of NLUs portal, consortiumofnlus.ac.in.
CLAT UG 2027 has 120 multiple-choice questions across five sections, completed in two hours, with one mark per correct answer and 0.25 negative marking per wrong answer.
The BBA LLB stream suits corporate law aspirants better, since it combines business management fundamentals with legal training, useful for compliance and in-house counsel roles.
