Lakhs of students apply to thousands of business schools every year. The value of an MBA degree is phenomenally high. At the same time, the acceptance rate into any top business school is very low. So, one of the most certain ways to make a place for yourself in a top MBA program is to make an MBA application that stands out.
Although there is no definite formula to make the perfect MBA application, here are 5 things an admission committee looks for in your MBA application. We spoke to the admission committee of Woxsen University which is the best private university in India and here’s what they said:
The First and foremost thing which attracts the admission committee is your academic abilities. A strong GPA or any academic achievements will definitely play a significant role in your B-school application. Keep in mind that an undergraduate GPA isn’t everything for an MBA admit, but a strong GPA will give the admission committee a sense of the academic capabilities of the applicant.
But, at the same time it doesn’t mean that you cannot get into a top MBA program if you have a low GPA in your under graduation. There are many standardized tests which you can take in order to make up for your low GPA. Tests like GMAT, CAT, GRE, WAT, will compliment your logical and quantitative competency. And assures the admission committee that you are intellectually on par with the batch and the information taught in business schools is not going over your head.
Everyone coming out of college will have some type of technological familiarity. But, What makes the difference is their ability to communicate. Be it any organization an MBA graduate joins right from delegating tasks to junior, pitching to clients or reporting to seniors good communication is a must.
Any admission committee looks for these skills in a student’s profile. There is no specific parameter on which an applicant’s communication skills are judged. It is judged in various stages starting from performance in verbal sections in standardized tests to essays, SOP’s , personal interviews, etc. In your application highlight the instances where you have proved to be an effective communicator.
MBA aspirants being uncertain about their career goals is not unusual. But it is important for an aspirant to present their long term and short term goals in their application to any top B Schools India . This will be an opportunity for the applicant to effectively communicate to the admission committee about their vision and how this MBA program helps them achieve it.
Your long term goal should speak about what your end goal in your career is or what is the peak you want to achieve in your professional life. And you plan on achieving it in the next 10 to 15 years. Whereas your short term goal is what are the immediate or small goals you want to achieve which will be the stepping stones to your long term goal. Through these an aspirant should explain their career trajectory and what is their plan to pursue it.
Having work experience in your application will definitely give applicants an edge. Since applicants will already have some hands-on experience they can easily understand and relate to the concepts being taught. There is no particular type or role of work experience that is required. It can be an internship, a full-time job or volunteer work. Any position that your target program deems as “work experience” and portrays your most impressive qualities will be the “best” experience that you can offer.
Many MBA aspirants assume that an MBA program is just a postgraduate program to improve their academic record. But an MBA is very different when compared to any other masters program. MBA is not just an academic course but has many aspects to improve the students personality holistically. And to get into such a program it is necessary to have a perfect application which tells the admission committee why you deserve it.
